Rupert Raines, death ,a Beloved Member of the Marietta Community, Passes Away at 86, Leaving Behind a Legacy of Service and Dedication.
Rupert Raines, a cherished and beloved member of the Marietta community, passed away on the morning of August 5, 2024, at the age of 86. Rupert, a graduate of Marietta High School, was married to Beverly Sanders and served with distinction in the Marietta Police Department, rising to the rank of Assistant Chief.
As a young police officer, he was injured in the gas explosion at Atherton’s Drug Store on Marietta Square that occurred on Halloween night in 1963. Rupert was deeply involved with the Methodist Youth Fellowship at Marietta First Methodist Church. He and his wife Beverly were known for their open-door policy for young teenagers, welcoming them into their home, which was adorned with bulletin boards full of Marietta High School class photos.
After retiring from the police department, Rupert continued his public service as a bailiff in Cobb County Superior Court, serving Judge Adele Grubbs and Judge Kim Childs for 19 years. Last year, he was inducted into the Marietta City Schools Athletic Hall of Fame as a contributor, reflecting his long-standing support for the school’s athletic programs.
He was a familiar presence at many athletic events, particularly football and basketball games, and in earlier years, he would escort the football team to away games. A celebration of Rupert’s life will be held on August 9, 2024, at Marietta First United Methodist Church. The family visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the parlor, followed by the service at 2:00 p.m., and a reception in the family life hall at 3:00 p.m.
Rupert is survived by his daughter Alicia Naumik and her husband, Paul; his son, Kevin Raines and his wife, Elaine; his grandchildren, Kaitlyn Camp and her husband, Jake, and Morgan Robinson and her husband, Wes; and his great-grandchildren, Ellis and Daniella. He is also survived by his sister, Winnie-Sue Quarels, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Rupert Raines’ legacy of dedication, service, and community spirit will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His contributions to the Marietta community, both through his professional career and his personal life, have left an indelible mark that will endure for generations.
The community is mourning the loss of this remarkable individual, who touched the lives of so many through his selfless service and unwavering commitment to others. Rupert’s passing is a reminder of the impact one person can have on a community, and his legacy will continue to inspire others to follow in his footsteps.
