Tragic Incident in Yavapai County: Jack Creed, 22, Dies in Accidental Shooting at UCYC Camp in Prescott, AZ, Highlighting the Crucial Need for Firearm Safety.

A tragic incident occurred in Yavapai County, AZ, involving the accidental discharge of a firearm, leading to the death of a young man from Peoria. The incident took place on Friday, July 26, at the UCYC Camp in Prescott, where 22-year-old Jack Creed and his friend, both avid outdoorsmen, were camping.

According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO), the two friends were engaged in “hunting skunks” in a secluded area of the campground. After returning to camp after sunset, the shooter, who remains unidentified but is known to be from the Phoenix area, was clearing their weapons.

Tragically, while attempting to ensure the gun was empty, the shooter pointed the firearm at Creed, pulled the charging handle back several times, and then pulled the trigger, believing the gun was unloaded. This action resulted in a .22 caliber round being fired into Creed’s abdomen.

Creed was initially stabilized at the Yavapai County Medical Center in Prescott but encountered complications while being transported to a Phoenix-area hospital. He succumbed to his injuries the following day, on July 27.

In their investigation, deputies discovered that Creed was set to be the best man at the shooter’s upcoming wedding, adding an extra layer of heartbreak to the tragic event. The YCSO has not filed charges as the investigation continues.

In light of this incident, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office emphasized crucial gun safety tips to prevent such tragedies: Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. Treat all firearms as if they are loaded. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are on target and ready to shoot. Be sure of your target and what lies beyond it.

This unfortunate event underscores the importance of strict adherence to firearm safety protocols to prevent accidental shootings and the loss of life. The YCSO’s tips serve as a poignant reminder of the devastating consequences of negligence and the need for constant vigilance when handling firearms.

As we mourn the loss of Jack Creed, we are reminded of the importance of prioritizing safety and responsible gun ownership. We extend our deepest condolences to Creed’s family, friends, and the shooter, who will undoubtedly be grappling with the aftermath of this tragic incident.

In the days ahead, we will come together to support those affected by this senseless tragedy and to reinforce the importance of firearm safety in our communities. We will honor Jack Creed’s memory by advocating for responsible gun ownership and ensuring that such a tragic incident never occurs again.

Rest in peace, Jack Creed. Your memory will be a blessing to us all.
