Shawn Calvey, a dedicated and respected firefighter with the Cleveland Fire Department, has passed away tragically on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. His passing has left his family, friends, and loved ones devastated, and the community is mourning the loss of a true hero.

Shawn served the Near West Side of Cleveland as a firefighter for eight years, primarily out of Station 23. During his tenure, he earned the respect and admiration of his peers for his unwavering work ethic, sharp instincts, extraordinary strength, and wonderful sense of humor. Shawn’s dedication to his work was evident in every aspect of his job, and he gave his all to the people of Cleveland, showing courage and perseverance in numerous situations that saved lives.

Shawn was more than just a firefighter; he was a real-life superhero who personified the qualities of a superb Cleveland firefighter. His impact on the lives of those he encountered is immeasurable, and his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched.

But Shawn’s true calling was being a family man. He was an incredible father to his two young daughters, Madeline, 3, and Landon, 6, and a devoted husband to his wife Kelly. Shawn served many people as a devoted friend, coach, uncle, cousin, brother, and son. His love and dedication to his family were unparalleled, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

The State of Ohio will recognize Firefighter Calvey as an active Line of Duty Death, and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) will present the IAFF Medal of Honor to Shawn’s family this week in recognition of their sacrifice in the line of duty. Shawn will be forever honored on the Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial in Colorado Springs, CO.
