Abel Mejia Obituary: Celebrating the Life and Legacy of a Beloved Indiana Bible College Student, Abel Mejia, Who Passed Away Suddenly on July 31, 2024, in a Tragic Car Accident at the Grand Canyon.
Abel Mejia, a vibrant and gentle soul, has passed away suddenly, leaving behind a trail of memories, love, and support for his family. The Indiana Bible College student was pronounced dead moments after a tragic occurrence on Wednesday, the 31st of July, 2024. According to reports, Abel died in a car accident while visiting the Grand Canyon.
The devastating loss has saddened many hearts ever since they heard the news, and without a doubt, he will be missed. Many who knew Abel will not forget his warm smile and gentle spirit so soon; and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him. He is the brother of Josh, a recent graduate of IBC (Indiana Bible College) who has visited Turning Point on several occasions.
A GoFundMe page was created by Steffany Bishop to support the family of Abel Mejia with funeral costs and any extra expenses that may arise at this time. Everyone who knew Abel would tell you about how he was the most polite, sweet, Jesus-loving young man that they knew. His smile could lighten up a room, and his laughter was so contagious.
On Wednesday, July 31, the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report of a visitor who fell from the rim approximately ¼ mile west of Pipe Creek Overlook. Responding rangers located the body of Abel Joseph Mejia, 20, of Hickory, North Carolina, 400 ft. below the rim. Mr. Mejia was near the edge of the rim when he suffered an accidental fall.
An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office. Grand Canyon National Park staff encourage all visitors to have a safe visit by staying on designated trails and walkways, always keeping a safe distance of at least six feet (2 m) from the edge of the rim, and staying behind railings and fences at overlooks.
Abel Mejia’s obituary and funeral arrangements will be released by his family in due course. As we mourn the loss of this young life, we take comfort in the memories of his life and legacy. His impact on the lives of those who knew him will never be forgotten, and his memory will continue to inspire and motivate others.
