James Edward Washington, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on Monday, July 15, 2024, at his home in Russellville, Alabama. He was 78 years old. James was a devoted family man who cherished his loved ones above all else. He was known for his quiet and humble nature, speaking only when his words held significance.
James had a passion for the outdoors and enjoyed working with his hands. He was a loyal supporter of the Atlanta Braves, Alabama football, and the Alabama Girls’ softball teams. His love for sports was only surpassed by his love for his family, and he spent countless hours attending his children’s and grandchildren’s games and events.
James is survived by his sons, Ral Alsbrook and Derek Washington; grandchildren, Jeremiah Alsbrook, Jordan Alsbrook, Elizabeth Alsbrook, Melanie Washington, Kirk Washington, and Luke Washington; 8 great-grandchildren; cousins who were like sisters, Barbara Robbins and Shelby Bruce; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Ann Perry Washington; twin daughters Lisa Nicole Washington and Mary Ruth Washington; his parents, Kirk and Bessie (Horton) Washington; brothers, Jimmy Ray Washington, Lloyd Washington, Larry Gene Washington, Willie Washington; and sisters, Jewel Smith, Faye Walker, and Estelle Franks.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 19, 2024, at Spry Memorial Chapel, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Ral Alsbrook, Derek Washington, and Kirk Washington will speak at the service. Burial will take place at Knights of Pythias Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Kirk Washington, Luke Washington, Tony Franks, Genus Miller, Rudy Smith, and Sammie Washington.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Shoals Faith Riders, c/o Christian Motorcycle Association, or to the Chuckie Mullins Scholarship Fund.
