Nathaniel “Nate” Wilcox, a young man with a bright future ahead of him, has tragically lost his life while pursuing his dream of becoming a firefighter. The SC State Athletics family and the Fort Myers Fire Department are mourning the passing of this talented individual, who left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

Nathaniel “Nate” Wilcox, a 22-year-old from Cutler Bay, south of Miami, was a firefighter applicant training at Station 11 in Fort Myers. He had medical complications during the physical assessment evaluation, which ultimately led to his tragic passing.

Fort Myers Fire Chief Tracy McMillion has expressed his heartfelt condolences to Nate’s family and has announced that the Department will posthumously make him a firefighter to fulfill his dream. The Department will also present his family with his helmet and jacket in a gesture of respect and admiration for his dedication.

According to Chief McMillion, Nate showed no signs of heat exhaustion during the physical assessment evaluation. However, after completing the test, he informed the instructors that he wasn’t feeling well, and they immediately rendered aid.
