A devastating crash on Memorial Day, May 27, 2024, claimed the lives of Tyler Campbell, 28, his wife Susan Campbell, 29, and their eight-year-old son Miles Campbell, leaving the community of Garner, North Carolina, in a state of shock and grief. The tragic event occurred at the intersection of US 70 Hwy and New Rand Road when a vehicle driven by Jordan Alexander Porter, 25, collided with the Campbell family’s car. Porter, who was reportedly under the influence at the time of the crash, has been arrested and charged with three counts of second-degree murder, three counts of felony death by motor vehicle, and multiple other felonies.
The Campbell family was known for their kindness, generosity, and dedication to their community. Tyler, a Technology Liaison at Levitate, was an avid runner and had completed several marathons, including the London Marathon. Susan, a Registered Nurse at Wake Med-Cary, was a compassionate and caring individual who always put the needs of others before her own. Miles, a second-grader at Avesboro Elementary School, was a bright and curious child who loved playing baseball and karate. The family was active in their community, attending The Summit Church at Garner, and were cherished by their friends and neighbors.
The crash occurred when Porter’s vehicle ran a red light and collided with the Campbell family’s car at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Memorial Day. Tyler and Susan were pronounced dead at the scene, while Miles was rushed to the hospital, where he was later declared brain dead. The community was left reeling from the loss, with friends and family describing the Campbells as a loving and caring family who always put others first.
Porter, who has a history of traffic violations, was charged with driving under the influence at the time of the crash. Additional charges were filed against him, including three counts of second-degree murder, three counts of felony death by motor vehicle, felony maintaining a vehicle for controlled substances, reckless driving, speeding at 82 mph in a 45 zone, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, failure to stop for a red light, expired registration, expired inspection, and transporting an open container of alcohol after consumption.
The Garner Police Department is leading the investigation into the crash, with support from public safety partners and the community. Police Chief Lorie Smith expressed her department’s sadness and condolences to the Campbell family, stating, “The Garner Police Department is deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred on Monday, May 27, 2024, leading to the loss of Tyler and Susan Campbell and their son, Miles. Responding to incidents involving loss of life is always difficult for first responders, and this case has been particularly heartbreaking due to the involvement of an entire family, including a young child.”
The community has come together to support the Campbell family, with a GoFundMe page set up to cover funeral expenses and a memorial service held at The Summit Church at Garner.
