Caeden Laffan, a 25-year-old firefighter-paramedic from Oakland, California, tragically lost his life in a drowning incident in San Diego early Thursday morning. Caeden was swimming on the north side of the Pacific Pier south of La Jolla around 2 a.m. when he went under the waves. According to San Diego Fire-Rescue, drinking may have played a role in the tragic event.
Caeden Laffan was in San Diego for the California Firefighter Games, an annual event that brings together firefighters from across the state for friendly competition. He was a young and enthusiastic member of the Oakland Fire Department, with a bright future ahead of him. Caeden graduated from the Oakland Fire Department’s Recruit Academy Class 1-19 in 2019 and was known for his zeal and determination.
The Laffan family has a long history with the Oakland Fire Department, characterized by dedication and sacrifice. Caeden’s father, Sean Laffan, was an Assistant Chief with the Oakland Fire Department who died in the line of duty at the age of 42 in November 2020.
