Michael Huguely, Beloved Middle School Football Coach and Community Leader, Passes Away at 55

Michael Huguely, a renowned middle school football coach and devoted community leader, passed away on Sunday, three days after suffering a stroke. His unexpected death has left a profound void in the hearts of many, particularly in Richmond, where he was a cherished figure.

Michael’s influence extended far beyond his 35-year coaching tenure, touching the lives of countless individuals through his selflessness, dedication, and love for his community. He was a true leader, always willing to lend a helping hand, and his generosity and humility inspired all who knew him.

As an associate pastor at Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, a track and field coach at Madison Central High School and Caudill Middle School, and a devoted husband and father, Michael’s impact was felt throughout the community. His friend and coaching partner, Eric Warford, praised Michael’s unwavering dedication, saying, “I don’t know when he slept, because he was always doing something, always helping someone.”

Michael’s love for coaching and his community was evident in everything he did. He and Eric Warford finally had the opportunity to coach together in 2023 at Caudill Middle School, leading the team to the middle school conference title. “To be able to be in his presence every day on the football field, it was something special,” Warford said.

Michael’s family and friends remember him as a humble and devoted individual who loved people, his family, and his community. His mother, Sarah Miller Johnson, said, “He was my pride and joy…he loved people, he loved his family, and he loved me.” His wife, Kim, added, “That was just him, that was who he was, he was a humble guy, and he loved to help people.”

Michael Huguely’s passing is a significant loss for Madison County, but his legacy will continue to inspire and motivate those who knew him.

His achievements as a coach, mentor, and community leader have had a lasting impact on countless lives, and his memory will be cherished by all who had the opportunity to meet him.
