Michael Christopher McDaniel, 33, tragically lost his life in a fiery crash following a high-speed chase with local law enforcement in the Pleasant Ridge Community.
The incident occurred on Holly Road, near its intersection with Dogwood Hills Road, early Thursday morning. Sgt. Derick Knight of the Jones County Sheriff’s Department had tried to stop McDaniel, who was driving a 2006 silver Ford F150, after a dangerous encounter on a lonely road off Highway 29.
Despite the deputy’s efforts to halt the vehicle, McDaniel sped off down Buffalo Hill Road, leading Knight on a dangerous pursuit through winding roads in the area. The chase came to a tragic end when McDaniel lost control on Holly Road, crashing into a tree and causing the pickup to catch fire.
Despite rescue attempts, McDaniel was unable to be saved from the flames. Another individual involved in the incident, Charles Shoemake, was apprehended after a struggle with law enforcement.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol crash team and JCSD accident reconstructionist Lt. J.D. Carter were called to investigate the scene due to the nature of the incident. Reports suggest that McDaniel may have taken his own life before the fire consumed him.
