John Joseph Mulligan, Cherished Son of Gerry Flaherty and the Late Matthew Flaherty, Passed Away on June 22, 2024, Leaving Behind a Legacy of Love, Kindness, and Devotion to Family, Friends, and Community

John Joseph Mulligan, fondly referred to as “Jay,” passed away on June 22, 2024, at the age of 54, leaving behind a void in the hearts of his loved ones and a legacy of love, kindness, and devotion to his family, friends, and community. Born in South Boston to Gerry Flaherty and the late Matthew Flaherty, Jay was a cherished son, brother, uncle, and friend to many.

Jay’s academic journey took him to Southeastern Massachusetts University, where he developed his artistic talents while playing NCAA hockey and earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. His passion for art, particularly Irish music and art, was an integral part of his life, and his vibrant paintings of landscapes, bar settings, sports, and people have been exhibited in galleries and received accolades.

Jay’s life was defined by his commitment to service, kindness, and generosity. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to his neighbors, whether it was mowing lawns or shoveling snow, and his home was always open to friends and roommates. He worked for Abby Foster, transporting and setting up oxygen for homebound patients, and served at various pubs, including Ames Plow, the Irish Embassy, McGann’s, and the Kimball Cafe, where he formed lasting connections with his customers.

For the past 24 years, Jay has been an invaluable member of Massachusetts General Hospital’s Police and Security Department, receiving recognition for his exceptional performance during critical events such as the Boston Marathon bombing and the COVID-19 pandemic. His dedication to his work and community was unwavering, and his kindness and generosity inspired countless individuals.

Jay’s passing may have been sudden, but his impact on the lives of those around him will be felt for years to come. His love for his family, friends, and community was palpable, and his legacy will continue to inspire and comfort those who knew him. His bright paintings, his love of Irish music and art, and his commitment to service will never be forgotten.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit the family on Thursday, June 27, 2024, from 4-8 PM at Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., Quincy. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, June 28, 2024. Following that, a Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church in Quincy at 10:30 a.m. The burial will take place at Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Massachusetts General Hospital’s Police and Security Department in Jay’s honor. Jay may be gone, but his memory will live on through the countless lives he touched and the legacy he left behind. Rest in peace, Jay. You will be dearly missed.
