Jai’mani Amir Rivera, a bright and innocent 7-year-old boy, tragically lost his life in a senseless shooting on the Near West Side earlier this week. On Tuesday, his mother asked him to take a cooking pot to a neighbor in a nearby building, a task that would ultimately prove to be his final act.
Surveillance footage showed Jai’mani leaving his building with the pot at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, unaware of the danger that lurked nearby. He was later seen returning with a bloodstain on his shirt, indicating that something had gone terribly wrong. A witness in the lobby tried to help Jai’mani as he collapsed and lost consciousness.
Police were called to the scene and rushed Jai’mani to Stroger Hospital, but unfortunately, he did not survive. A 911 caller reported hearing gunshots and seeing a teenage boy with a rifle firing towards the apartments. The shooter then fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of devastation and heartbreak.
Police received information that led them to Raysean Comer, who was found a few blocks away from the crime scene. Shell casings were recovered from the area near the high school across from the apartments, further solidifying the evidence against Comer.
