Denton “Denny Lee” Oakes Obituary: Tragic Bell County Collision Claims Life of Somerset Man

Denton “Denny Lee” Oakes, a 53-year-old resident of Somerset, Kentucky, tragically passed away in a fatal collision involving a coal truck in Bell County on Monday, June 17, 2024.

According to the Bell County Sheriff’s Department, the incident occurred on Highway 119, near the intersection of KY 2012, when a fully-loaded coal truck slowly entered the highway from KY 2012. A Red Bull delivery truck, driven by Oakes, collided with the rear end of the coal truck.

The impact of the collision resulted in the unfortunate death of Oakes, while the driver of the coal truck remained uninjured. The investigation, led by Bell County Sgt. Frank Foster, has ruled out drugs and alcohol as contributing factors.

The Bell County Sheriff’s Department, EMS, Rescue, Volunteer Fire Department, and other officials responded to the scene.

Denton “Denny Lee” Oakes is survived by his family, including his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Wilbur “Dude” Oakes, and his brother, Denton Lee Oakes.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Bethlehem Baptist Church in Naomi, KY. Arrangements for the funeral service will be announced shortly.
