Karl Gregory Death – New Jersey Attorney General Matt Plakin has disclosed the identities of the two police officers involved in a shootout with an attempted murder suspect in Woodbridge.
The officers involved are Justin Nerney from the Woodbridge Police and NYPD Detective Matthew Mauro. Fortunately, both officers have been discharged from the hospital and are currently recuperating at home.
The civilian who tragically lost his life during the incident has been identified as Karl Gregory, a 46-year-old resident of New York, New York. Gregory was wanted by the New York City Police for an attempted homicide in East Harlem.
According to the initial investigation, on Wednesday, June 12, officers from the Edison Police Department received information from an Automated License Plate Reader indicating that a vehicle connected to a shooting in New York City, which left the victim with life-threatening injuries, was in their vicinity.
Officers from the Edison and Woodbridge police departments promptly responded to the Royal Albert’s Palace hotel on King Georges Post Road in Woodbridge, where they discovered the unoccupied vehicle parked in the lot. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) was immediately notified.
NYPD detectives arrived at the scene and briefed the Woodbridge police personnel on the ongoing criminal investigation in New York.
In the early hours of Thursday, while conducting a civilian interview at the hotel, law enforcement personnel witnessed Karl Gregory exiting the elevator towards the lobby, carrying multiple bags. Upon noticing the presence of officers in the lobby, Gregory dropped his bags and reached into a black backpack.
A shootout ensued between Gregory and Woodbridge Officers Drew Krupinski and Justin Nerney, as well as NYPD Detective Matthew Mauro. During the exchange of gunfire, Gregory, Officer Nerney, and Detective Mauro sustained injuries. Woodbridge PD officers immediately provided medical assistance to Gregory until EMS personnel arrived.
Regrettably, Gregory was later pronounced deceased.
