The Canales family confirmed his death in a statement shared on the official Facebook page of the Johnny and Nora Canales Show. Described as more than just a husband, father, TV host, musician, and entertainer, Johnny Canales was a symbol of hope and joy. His infectious charisma and unwavering commitment to promoting Latino music and culture left an indelible mark on the world.

Born in Mexico, Canales became widely recognized for his catchphrase “Take it away” while hosting a televised music show in Corpus Christi, Texas, during the 1980s and 1990s.

He played a pivotal role in launching the career of Tejano superstar Selena through his show and was portrayed by actor Luis Bordonada in the Netflix series “Selena: The Series.”

The syndicated show reached its peak popularity, captivating audiences across the United States, Mexico, and Latin America.

Art Galvan, a musician from Corpus Christi, fondly recalled touring with Canales’ band in the 1970s and considered him a dear friend. Galvan reminisced about the time when Canales offered him a higher pay of $75 per gig, which was a significant amount back then.

“He was a funny, funny guy… he was a good entertainer, he had the gift of gab,” Galvan shared. “He lived a long, good life.”

Dusty Oliveira, another Corpus Christi musician and music producer, expressed how Canales’ show inspired him as a child.

Oliveira emphasized the importance of witnessing someone from their own community achieve success on a national and even global scale, as it encourages others to pursue their dreams.
