Life and Career

Marvin Haywood served as the Director of Bands at both John Ehret High School and the Jewish Philharmonic Society Band of Excellence. Previously, he worked at Arise Academy as a Music Teacher and an Assistant Band Director. Alcorn State University awarded Marvin a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music, and he also attended Algiers Technology Academy throughout his academic career. New Orleans, Louisiana, was his birthplace and he remained there until the time of his passing. He was a native and citizen of the city.

Throughout his time in the New Orleans band community, he was a remarkable example to follow, a mentor, a music educator, and an overall pillar. Quite a few pupils were able to make their way to further education with his assistance. Some of them undoubtedly did not believe that they would be able to attend a higher education institution due to financial constraints. In addition, he motivated a great number of people to persevere even when they felt like giving up at certain stages.

Waking up this morning, I’m still feeling numb to it all. You definitely hurt us with this one but I understand Marvin Haywood. I don’t know what to say but man I am very proud of you! I thank God that we crossed paths in this lifetime! I thank you for trusting me during your time here! I thank you for calling me a friend and that’s something you took very seriously! You were one of the little brothers I never had and man you are one of the greatest people who blessed me with your presence. – said Caleb Red paying tribute
