A tragic incident occurred on Friday in Okaloosa County, resulting in the loss of life of 23-year-old U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Roger Fortson. The officer-involved shooting took place at the 319 Racetrack Road apartments, leaving the community in shock and grief.
According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy responded to a commotion and encountered Fortson with a gun. The deputy introduced himself as law enforcement, and in self-defense, shot Fortson. The young airman was hospitalized but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
Fortson was a valued member of the 4th Special Operations Squadron at Hurlburt Field, where he had served since November 19, 2019. The 1st Special Operations Wing has prioritized providing support to Fortson’s family and squadron during this difficult time.
