Springfield Southeast High school student 16-year-old Keyon Day killed in shooting

Springfield Public Schools has affirmed in a statement that the individual who tragically lost their life in Wednesday’s fatal shooting near Southeast High School was a student at the school.

“Our heartfelt thoughts and condolences are with the victim’s family and friends during this challenging period,” expressed the district in its statement.

Additionally, the district conveyed its appreciation for the swift and coordinated response of law enforcement to the shooting.

Authorities have announced the implementation of additional patrols and security measures in the vicinity of the two schools for as long as necessary.

Furthermore, the district’s Crisis Response Team will remain available to provide support to students and staff members during this difficult time.

The Springfield Police Department has verified the death of a 16-year-old after a shooting on Wednesday morning, leading to a precautionary lockdown at two nearby schools.

The incident occurred in the vicinity of Taylor and Cornell Avenues, just a few blocks away from Southeast High School and Ball Charter School.

Authorities stated that officers responded to a call at 8:42 a.m. reporting a male shot near the roadway.

Upon arrival, they discovered the 16-year-old with a gunshot wound to the lower torso.

The victim was transported to HSHS St. John’s Hospital via ambulance and underwent surgery, unfortunately passing away.

His death was confirmed at 9:49 a.m. Following the shooting report, the two nearby schools were placed under a soft lockdown, which has now been lifted.

The Springfield Police Criminal Investigations Division is currently probing the fatal incident.

Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon disclosed that an autopsy for the teenager is slated for Thursday, and his identity will remain undisclosed until his family is informed.
