The body of Keith Eastwood, a 67-year-old homeless man, was discovered by a driver at around 6 a.m. on US-6, just outside Westville in LaPorte County. LaPorte County Coroner Lynn Swanson indicated that Eastwood’s death likely occurred less than half an hour before emergency services were alerted.
Swanson noted that based on the body’s condition and temperature, Eastwood had not been deceased for an extended period.
During the investigation, it was revealed that Eastwood would occasionally stay with friends in Lake County and would travel around by accepting rides. Despite offers of assistance, Eastwood’s sister mentioned that he chose to remain homeless and live life on his own terms.
A blood test was conducted to determine if there were any substances in his system, but the results will not be available for a few weeks.
Authorities are currently trying to identify the driver responsible for Eastwood’s death. Individuals with relevant information or surveillance footage of the hit-and-run incident are urged to reach out to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office at (219)-326-7700.
