Mr. William R. “Billy” McLeod, who had reached the age of 93, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, April 2, 2024. He had reached the highest age of his life. The reason for the death was unknown at the time. It was a considerable amount of time since he had made a full recovery from his illness.
Both of his parents, Gilbert K. McLeod and Willie Sue Pierson McLeod, had passed away prior to his birth on February 24, 1931 in Sumter County. His birth took place in the presence of his mother. It was the ninth child that the couple had together. During his mother’s lifetime, he was the only child that she raised all by herself.
He was the only child that the couple ever had the pleasure of bearing; they never had any other children. He was taken into consideration by both of them as their son. It was believed that he was a member of their family. The year 1954 marked the beginning of his career in the grocery industry, and he went on to own a number of Piggly Wiggly Grocery Stores on multiple occasions.
His career began in the year 1954. His professional life started in the year 1954. 1954 marked the beginning of his career when he first began working. During the sixty-five years that he was involved in the Black Angus cattle industry, he was the proprietor of Black Crest Farms and had been involved in the industry.

W.R. “Ricky” McLeod, Jr. (Sondra) of Manning, Gilbert Mark McLeod (Sandy) of Sumter, and Martha Melissa McLeod (Steve) of Sumter; six grandchildren, Becky McLeod, Will McLeod (Jill), Ashleigh Sommerville (Eric), John Skinner (Christine), Wade Skinner (Sarah), and Ezra McLeod; seven great-grandchildren, step-sons, Robbie Jordan (Lisa) and Rodney Jordan (Sissy); five step-grandchildren; and a special friend, Jan Whitaker.
At 1 o’clock Saturday afternoon, the funeral will be officiated by Mr. Gilbert Griffin and Mr. Billy Griffin at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery will serve as the site of the burial.
On Friday, friends and family are invited to visit Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Giving to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1770 US Highway 15 South, Sumter, SC 29150-8704, in lieu of flowers, is also acceptable. Funeral services and cremation are being handled by Elmore-Cannon-Stephens of Sumter.
