Unfortunately, I have some sad news to share about a much-loved member of our Tanner/United Metro family. David L. Harper, better known as Dave, went away yesterday on his birthday, April 2. Until his retirement from Cemex in 2020, Dave was a devoted employee of the Tanner Companies Yuma Division, which includes Rinker and Cemex. He was also Marge Harper’s brother-in-law.
In the early 1980s, Dave’s association with Tanner started when George Davis recruited him to assist with a building project. Dave worked his way up the ladder and was eventually responsible for driving, dispatching, operating the batch plant, managing the plant, supervising trucks, and even providing sales and service. His coworkers held Dave in high esteem because of the respect and admiration he garnered during his time there.
When Marge moved from United Metro’s Phoenix office to the Yuma office, where she worked in accounting and information technology, Dave’s life took a turn for the worse. They were married in November 1990 after a strong personal connection developed from their professional relationship.
Kyle Edmund, Katheryn Michelle (Katie), and Ryan Murphy—who tragically died at birth—were their children. Cassandra Elena, Dave’s daughter from a prior marriage, was also born to him. Along with his many roles in the family and the workplace, Dave was well-known for his talent in the kitchen, love of golf, and enthusiasm for most sports. People spoke highly of him, praising him as a genuine gentleman and a kind soul.
After feeling fine only days before, Dave’s illness took a dramatic turn on his 74th birthday, when he died of a severe case of pneumonia. Surrounded by his loved ones, he passed away, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and warmth.
After Dave’s sudden death, Marge wants everyone to make sure they get a pneumonia shot every year. We will provide you with details about the services when they are available. As we wait, let us honor Dave’s memory for the love and commitment he gave us and the difference he made in the world.
