The Terrapin Trail Garage, situated in College Park on the 4100 block of Terrapin Trail, is the scene of a death investigation by the University of Maryland Police Department, which followed a fall that happened in front of the garage. College Park, Maryland is home to the public research university known as the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD), or simply Maryland. A land-grant university is what it is.

The flagship campus of Maryland’s University System, UMD has been around since 1856. This university also happens to be the largest in the state and the entire Washington, DC metropolitan area. With twelve schools and colleges and over two hundred degree-granting programs, the university offers a diverse array of academic offerings.

The number of degree programs offered ranges from 83 doctoral programs to 107 master’s programs and 113 undergraduate majors. In intercollegiate athletics, the University of Maryland (UMD) competes as a member of the fiercely competitive Big Ten Conference and is a distinguished member of the Association of American Universities (AAU). Numerous research collaborations with the federal government have resulted from the University of Maryland’s proximity to Washington, D.C.

In addition to receiving institutional support and research funding from the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Security Agency, and the Department of Homeland Security, faculty members also receive funding from others.

A formal strategic partnership was formed between the University of Maryland, College Park and the University of Maryland, Baltimore after the two institutions worked together to improve their academic, medical, and research offerings. Beyond what each campus could achieve on its own, this collaboration hopes to increase the size of research grants and pave the way for joint faculty appointments.

The National Science Foundation ranked 17th among American universities in terms of the total amount of money allocated to research and development in 2021, totaling $1.14 billion. Operating funds for the University of Maryland are anticipated to be approximately $2.2 billion in 2021.
