Sarah Whiteley was a beloved member of the Metro.co.uk family and a highly respected columnist who was widely recognized for her insightful parenting articles. We are deeply saddened to hear of her passing. Sarah passed away unexpectedly on March 10th at the age of 39. She was a gifted journalist, a loving mother to Theo and Immy, and a devoted wife to Tom.
Sarah left behind a legacy of kindness, warmth, and exceptional journalism. Sarah became beloved by both her coworkers and readers upon joining the Metro team two years ago in the capacity of a freelance contributor.
She was an integral part of our tight-knit community, spreading joy and warmth with her contagious laughter and warm Geordie charm. Every time she spoke on Zoom, she would say, “hey chick,” and her smile would lift anyone’s spirits. In addition to her impressive career accomplishments, Sarah shone as a source of kindness and encouragement to everyone she met. She was wise and compassionate at the same time, whether she was recommending books or just listening when people were going through tough times.
Her colleagues will miss her dearly as a gifted journalist and a friend because of her genuine warmth and unfaltering friendship. When it came to journalism and editing, Sarah was unrivaled. She approached every task with expertise, diplomacy, and a relentless pursuit of perfection, whether it was handling difficult edits or conducting interviews over the phone. Her remarkable talent and commitment were recognized by her colleagues when she turned even the most challenging tasks into exquisite works of art. Upon hearing of Sarah’s passing, many paid tribute to her, remembering her contagious enthusiasm and unmatched professionalism with fondness. Those fortunate enough to have worked with her will always remember her for the tremendous influence she had on journalism and her dogged pursuit of excellence.
Sarah Whiteley has left behind cherished memories and invaluable contributions, which bring us comfort as we mourn her loss. Her impact on those fortunate enough to have known her, along with her extraordinary spirit and unfaltering kindness, will ensure that her legacy lives on. Though we shall never forget her, our love and gratitude will carry on in her memory. Perseverance, passion, and a dogged pursuit of her journalism dream defined Sarah’s path to the profession. She attended Durham University to study English literature and history, and then she worked relentlessly to fulfill her ambition of working as a magazine journalist.
Sarah became the Features Editor at prestigious magazines like Love It!, Reveal, and Best after a long and successful career that was marked by her unwavering commitment and perseverance. She jumped headfirst into the adventure, and she felt a sense of accomplishment when her name appeared under her published stories and when her words resonated with readers.
First and foremost, Sarah was a doting wife and mother whose joy in life came from spending time with her loved ones. It was easy to see the pride radiating off of her when she spoke about Immy’s contagious laughter or Theo’s compassionate nature. The daily Zoom meetings allowed coworkers to see the joy and love that filled Sarah and Tom’s home, which was a reflection of the strong relationships that bonded them as a family.
