A significant number of individuals in and around Hamilton County are grieving the loss of Brigid Kelly, a former state lawmaker and auditor. Kelly passed away on Tuesday following a two-year struggle with cancer.
Kelly passed away at her residence on Tuesday, in the presence of “affection and tranquility,” as stated by her family on behalf of the Hamilton County auditor’s office. The statement from Kelly’s family described her as a cherished spouse, offspring, and sibling, a highly esteemed companion, and a genuine government official.
Last week, Kelly voluntarily stepped down from her role after undergoing two years of medical care for Esophageal cancer. Kelly held the position of county auditor from March 2023 until her recent retirement.
A multitude of county officials and lawmakers, including Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, are expressing their sympathies and paying honor to Kelly.DeWine issued a directive to lower flags as a tribute to honor Kelly’s life and the impact she left behind.
“Fran and I are deeply grieved by the passing of Hamilton County Auditor Brigid Kelly.” Brigid devoted a significant portion of her professional life to serving the public, initially as a councilwoman in Norwood, then as a state representative, and last as the auditor for Hamilton County. Brigid was known by her colleagues, including myself, to be affable, cooperative, and open to collaborating with both sides to promote the welfare of the people of Ohio. In a statement, DeWine expressed his deepest sympathy to Brigid’s husband, Steve, and her entire family.
Senator Sherrod Brown also honored Kelly’s life and distinguished career in public service. “Today is a challenging day for all those fortunate individuals who had the privilege of knowing Brigid Kelly.” Brigid, a staunch advocate for workers and families in Southwest Ohio, always championed the importance of labor and the well-being of all Ohioans. She was prematurely taken away from us. “Connie and I will deeply miss her,” Brown expressed on X, previously recognized as Twitter.
Commissioner Alicia Reece issued a statement after the death of Kelly. “I am devastated by the news of Auditor Brigid Kelly’s death.” We have tragically lost a distinguished advocate for the people and a dedicated government official prematurely.
Please offer your prayers for the Kelly family. Reece stated that he has requested the County Administrator to lower the flags to half-staff on all county-owned facilities as a tribute to County Auditor Brigid Kelly. Hamilton County Prosecutor Melissa Powers issued a statement in response to Kelly’s death.

She exhibited immense courage in her battle against cancer over the past two years. Powers expressed her profound sympathy to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this exceptionally difficult period, as stated in her official statement.
