It is with a heavy heart that we must inform you of the demise of Tom Cardwell, who served as the President of our Club. Since the club’s founding 48 years ago, Tom has been an indispensable member, serving as the primary motivator for the most of this period.
The loss of Tom will be irreparable.
At this difficult time, we are keeping Tom’s wife and family in our thoughts and prayers. View the following statement, which was provided by Terry and Julie, Tom’s children:
On Thursday, March 21, Tom Cardwell passed away after a courageous fight against mesothelioma, a disease that is known to be very brutal. We are devastated to convey this news. Tom was our husband, father, grandfather, and greatest friend. He was adored by all of us.
His whole life, Dad was a huge fan of sports and the people he met through those sports. In addition to being a superb cricket player, he was a schoolboy who played football at Anfield.
He played cricket in various strange locations, such as Central Park in New York City, on top of Battersea Power plant, and on board ships when he was serving in the merchant navy.
In the 1970s, Dad began his table tennis career working for the old S&L club in Corby, where he participated in the Kettering League. As a result of the closing of the Corby steelworks, the club underwent a transformation and became the modern Corby Town Table Tennis Club when Dad was in charge of it.
Later in life, he discovered his vocation as a table tennis instructor, where he excelled thanks to his aptitude for working with people, his generosity, and his sensitivity. He was very pleased of each and every one of the players that he taught, and he stuck around until the very end to track their growth.
