To Robin and the rest of Terry Brooks’s family, our deepest sympathies and condolences are sent to you. Terry Brooks passed away unexpectedly.
Everyone in Edmonton who knew and loved Terry will miss him terribly because he was such a great supporter of Rock in the city.
Rest in peace, Terry. Clyde and Margaret “Peggy” Hyde Brooks welcomed their son Terry Brooks into the world on February 10, 1940 through the city of Atlanta, Michigan. After completing his high school education at Atlanta High School in 1958, he went on to study at County Normal School in Hillman, Michigan.
Over the course of one year, he began his teaching career at Sand Lake, Michigan, in a one-room school house. At the same time, he continued his schooling to get a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary schooling. In 1958, he tied the knot with Carol Peterson, who had gone on to pass away.
Rocky, Perry, Renee, and Drew were the four children that they carried together. Whenever Terry was not in the classroom, he was hard at work constructing and remodeling homes. In the course of his educational career, he and his family moved to Rockford, Sand Lake, and Hillman. During this time, he worked as a teacher in elementary classes, as well as a principal and Director of Community Education.
In the year 1976, he agreed to take on the role of Superintendent of the Big Bay de Noc Public Schools, which is located in the Upper Peninsula of Cooks, Michigan. Summer Island is an island in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan that is located in Northern Lake Michigan.
In the early 1960s, he and many friends from the Atlanta area purchased forty acres of unoccupied land on the island named Summer Island. From the beginning, the idea was to make use of this for hunting. Within a span of two years, the partners came to the conclusion that they should establish a summer camp that would allow students from high school and college to earn credits in the science curriculum. Their Summer Island Science Camp was in operation for a period of six years.
The year 1988 marked Terry’s acceptance of the job of Superintendent at Saugatuck Public Schools. He continued in that role until 1995, when he retired and moved back to his home in Cooks, Michigan. Terry tied the knot with Sandra Wedge Brooks in the year 2002. As a result of their passion for home improvement, they were able to flip numerous houses in the Douglas region.
Terry would go on hunting expeditions to places like Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Nova Scotia, and Western Canada when he wasn’t working in the construction industry by his side. Spending time with their family and friends, going on adventures, going hunting, spending time at their home on Summer Island, and spending the winter months in Florida were all activities that Terry and Sandy enjoyed doing.
Sandy retired from Saugatuck Public Schools in 2009, and the couple continued to reside in their home in Cooks until 2021. After that, they moved back to their home outside of Douglas, which is located in the surrounding area. Terry is survived by his wife Sandy and her two children, Naomi Jeff Shashaguay of Saugatuck and Kyle Doreen Moeller of Grand Rapids, as well as four grandchildren, Jadin Reed, Mia Reed, Jeffrey Shashaguay, and Remy Moeller.
He is also survived by his sisters, Zoe Oltz of New Burn, North Carolina, and Patricia Beauregard of Ypsilanti, sisters-in-law Sharon Mattieu of Allegan and Theresa Scott Pederson of Grand Rapids, sisters-in-law Sharon Mattieu of Allegan and Theresa Scott Pederson of Grand Rapids, brothers-in-law Ed Jen Wedge of Allegan and Matt Wedge of Grand Rapids, and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Before him, his parents, sons Rockford and Travis Perry, father and mother-in-law Lyle and Rose Wedge, and brother-in-law Wayne Beauregard all passed away. He is the last surviving member of his immediate family.
