The passing of our father, Jim Cowling, occurred on July 4, 2019, when he was 84 years old. Born in Nanaimo, he relocated to Campbell River in 1965, then Terrace, and finally returned to Campbell River in 1976. His initial move was to Campbell River.
Golf, telling stories, the Vancouver Canucks, hamburgers, Model Ts, Robert Bateman, cool beer, the Big Bang Theory, crooners, ice cream treats, shooting guns, World War II history, British Comedians, fishing, Chevrolets, a sip or two of Glenfiddich in the evening, and most importantly, his family were all things that he enjoyed.
Dad has lived in Campbell River for a very long time. At various points in his professional life, he was involved in a wide range of activities, including the sale of logging trucks, the co-ownership of Vancouver Island Parts, and the ownership of Willow Point Super Video.
By participating in organizations such as the Kinsmen Club, the Chamber of Commerce, Citizens on Patrol, the Vintage Car Club, the Gun Club, and Crime Stoppers, he contributed a significant amount of time to the community. There was nothing that brought him more happiness than a roast beef meal on a Sunday night, with his family to whom he could retell stories as he offered us his homemade wine, which was of the worst quality.
We would like to express our gratitude to a few individuals who have made a significant impact on our lives and the lives of our father over the past few years. These individuals are Berylann and Sue, Gail and Al, Duane and Dianne, Stu, and Dad’s neighbors in Willowpoint.
Together, you all contributed to making his house a home and the neighborhood a place where people feel supported. In this time of need, we would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Nelson and the team at Campbell River Hospice Society for providing us with comfort and assistance.
Because there will be no memorial service, we ask that you raise a glass, share a story, or take a minute to reflect on Dad when you are on the 18th green at Storey Creek or any other location. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either the Campbell River Hospice Society or the Campbell River Hospital Foundation. Your generosity would be immensely appreciated. His affection for this city was undeniable.
His parents, James and Lillian, as well as his wife, Shannan, his partner, Hilda Folkers, and his son-in-law, Corey, all passed away before him.
From Pete Selena, Bill Connie, Shirley Dwayne, and Shannan, as well as all of our children and grandchildren, we send our love and affection to you, Dad.
