He was a WWII veteran of the US Army, having served in the 40th Infantry Division in the Philippines and Korea. In 1950, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from Michigan State University. After 35 years as manager of Farm Bureau Services’ Michigan Elevator Exchange section, Ed served as vice president and assistant secretary until retiring in 1985.
His favourite times of the year were when the family got together; he was an active farmer until he was ninety-two years old. Ed and Dona had fantastic Sweet Corn Parties at their farm for over 25 years. He held positions on numerous agricultural societies, participated in the Chicago and Detroit Boards of Trade.
President Carter extended an invitation to him in 1978 to take part in a trip to Cuba to talk about resuming the agricultural trade between the US and Cuba. Ed received the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Distinguished Service Award in 2006 in recognition of his career achievements to the agricultural field. His church, Grand Ledge Baptist Church, was his home.
When Ed embraced the Lord Jesus Christ as his Saviour and realised he would see Mary and Dona again in paradise in 1976, he believed that was the finest moment of his life and the most significant choice he had ever made.
