James Owen Derry, affectionately known as Jim, was a beloved member of the Shrewsbury community, known for his dedication to his family, his service to his country, and his contributions as a law enforcement officer. On Tuesday, March 5th, at the age of 89, Jim peacefully passed away after a courageous battle with leukemia. His life story is one of resilience, love, and commitment, leaving an indelible mark on those who knew him.
Early Life and Education Jim was born on May 15, 1934, in Worcester, Massachusetts, to Peter M. Derry Sr. and Patience M. Derry. Raised in Worcester, he attended South High School, where he laid the foundation for his future endeavors. His upbringing instilled in him a deep pride in his Irish heritage, a trait that remained with him throughout his life.
Following his education, Jim answered the call to serve his country and honorably joined the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. His military service was a testament to his patriotism and his willingness to sacrifice for the greater good.
Professional Career Jim’s professional journey spanned over three decades, during which he made significant contributions to law enforcement. He began his career with the Massachusetts State Police before transitioning to the Shrewsbury Police Department, where he served as both a patrolman and a detective. Jim was widely respected within the community for his dedication and integrity as a law enforcement officer.
Personal Life: Passions and Hobbies
Beyond his professional achievements, Jim was a devoted family man and cherished husband to Paula M. Derry. The couple met at Saint Anne’s Church in 1978 and shared a deep bond that culminated in marriage on October 28, 1995. Jim leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion to his wife, children, step-children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Jim lived life to the fullest and had a passion for sports and outdoor activities.
An avid athlete, he enjoyed playing baseball, softball, horseshoes, fishing, and golf. He was also a dedicated fan of Boston sports teams and relished his annual birthday trips to the casino. Later in life, Jim found solace in spending time with his brother and friends at the VFW #6907 in West Boylston, as well as enjoying the camaraderie of the Worcester Police Golf League.
Retreat in West Chesterfield: Final Farewell
Jim and Paula cherished their eighteen years at their cabin in West Chesterfield, New Hampshire, considering it their ultimate retreat. They spent countless hours golfing with friends and enjoying the tranquility of nature, with Jim often accompanied by his loyal companion, Blue, on long walks.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at Saint Anne’s Church in Shrewsbury, where calling hours will be held on Sunday, March 10th. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday in the church, followed by military honors. Jim will be laid to rest at Mountain View Cemetery in Shrewsbury, where he will be forever remembered for his remarkable life and legacy.
