The Bristol community mourns the loss of a beloved son, father, grandfather, and friend, Claude E. “Cotton” Rogers, who peacefully departed this life to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 24, 2024. At the age of 79, Cotton’s journey on earth came to a close at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and cherished memories. Born on May 28, 1944, in Bristol, Tennessee, Cotton was the son of the late Neil and Sophia Eldreth Rogers. In this tribute, we honor the life and memory of Claude E. “Cotton” Rogers, a man whose impact on his community and loved ones will never be forgotten.
A Proud Graduate and Veteran
Cotton was a proud graduate of Holston Valley High School, Class of 1963, where he excelled both academically and athletically. As a member of the basketball team, he showcased his talents on the court, earning the respect and admiration of his peers. Following his graduation, Cotton answered the call to serve his country, bravely joining the U.S. Army and serving during the Vietnam War. His selfless dedication to defending the freedoms we hold dear will forever be remembered and honored.
A Pillar of Faith and Community Involvement
Throughout his life, Cotton remained steadfast in his faith and commitment to serving others. He was a devoted member of Cornerstone Freewill Baptist Church, where his faith provided him with strength and guidance. Additionally, Cotton was actively involved in his community as a long-time member of the Buffalo Ruritan Club and the Sullivan County Cattleman Association. His willingness to give back and make a positive impact on those around him left an enduring mark on the Bristol community.
Cherished Family Man
Above all else, Cotton was a devoted family man who cherished his role as a husband, father, and grandfather. He shared many precious moments with his beloved wife, Darkis Newton Rogers, whose memory he held dear in his heart. Cotton’s love knew no bounds, and he took great pride in watching his children, Brian Rogers, Alisha Davis, and Amanda Stoltz, grow and flourish. His grandchildren, Zachary Rogers, Hadley Davis, Brice Davis, Maddy Stoltz, and Ellie Stoltz, brought immeasurable joy and happiness into his life, filling his days with love and laughter.
Fondly Remembered and Deeply Missed
Cotton’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His kind spirit, gentle demeanor, and unwavering commitment to his faith and community will be dearly missed. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Darkis Newton Rogers. He leaves behind his loving children, grandchildren, sister Phyllis Hartley, and several nieces and nephews, who will continue to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy of love and service.
