John Moon, Jr., 73, of Masontown, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, February 24, 2024, at his residence following complications from pneumonia. His departure leaves a void in the hearts of many, but his legacy of love and kindness will endure forever.
Beyond his work in the mines, John found joy and solace in the simple pleasures of life. He had a passion for golfing, spending countless hours on the green perfecting his swing and enjoying the camaraderie of friends. Additionally, John possessed a creative spirit, finding fulfillment in painting pictures that captured the beauty of the world around him.
Early Life and Career
Born on February 15, 1951, in Uniontown, PA, John was the beloved son of the late John Moon, Sr. and Viola Ship Moon. From a young age, John exhibited a strong work ethic and unwavering determination. At the age of 18, he embarked on a career in coal mining, a profession that would shape much of his life. For 37 years, John dedicated himself to his work as a coal miner, spending the entirety of his career with Cumberland Coal. Despite the challenges and dangers inherent in his profession, John approached each day with courage and resilience, earning the respect and admiration of all who knew him.
Cherished Family
John’s greatest source of pride and joy was his family. He shared 51 beautiful years of marriage with his devoted wife, Virginia Hawkinberry Moon, whom he wed on June 16, 1973. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. In addition to his beloved wife, John leaves behind a legacy of love through his three children: Tina Moon Tasker and her husband Brian of Masontown, John Moon III and his wife Michelle of Grafton, and Brian Moon of Masontown. His grandchildren, Dakota Tasker, Emily Moon Fischer, Madison Moon Alderson, Branson Tasker, Allison Moon, and Kella Moon, brought him immeasurable joy and pride. He adored his two great-grandchildren, Olivia Fischer and Caroline Tasker, affectionately known as “Giggles” and “Cutie Pie” respectively.
John was also a devoted brother to his siblings: Tammy Moon Yoney and husband Bob of Waynesburg, PA, Sue Moon Fowler and husband Tom of Jefferson, PA, Candy Moon Oxenrider and husband Dirk of Upper St. Clair, PA, and Rose Moon Sroka of Waynesburg, PA. His extended family, including nieces, nephews, and his cherished furbabies Delilah and Rico, brought additional warmth and love into his life.
