Hervy Kornegay Obituary, Hervy Kornegay Has Passed Away

On Thursday, February 15, 2024, the world lost a beloved figure with the passing of Dr. Hervy B. Kornegay, Sr. at the age of 90. Dr. Kornegay’s legacy as a dedicated physician, loving family man, and pillar of his community will forever be cherished by those whose lives he touched.

Born on April 28, 1933, in Calypso, North Carolina, Dr. Kornegay was the cherished only child of Hervy Battle and Edwina Sutton Kornegay. He received his early education in Calypso before graduating from Goldsboro High School in 1951. Dr. Kornegay went on to attend Wake Forest College, where he distinguished himself as a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity. In 1957, he graduated from Bowman Gray Medical School, laying the foundation for his illustrious career in medicine.

Service to Country

Dr. Kornegay’s commitment to service extended beyond the medical field. From 1959 to 1961, he honorably served as a Captain in the United States Air Force, stationed in Japan. His dedication to duty and unwavering patriotism left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Following his military service, Dr. Kornegay embarked on a distinguished medical career that spanned over five decades.

He began his practice in Faison before moving to Mount Olive, where he co-founded the Mount Olive Family Medicine Center in 1970 alongside his dear friend and colleague, Dr. Robert Shackelford. For nearly 50 years, Dr. Kornegay provided compassionate care to the communities of southern Wayne and northern Duplin counties, touching the lives of countless patients and families.
