Atchison Senior Village was the location where Hazel Marie Cummings, a much-loved member of the Lancaster, Kansas community, passed away in a peaceful manner on February 15, 2024. The community is in mourning over the loss of this beloved member. In addition to being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and member of the community, Hazel’s life was a demonstration of love, family, and the spirit of community.

Early Years and Family Life

Atchison, Kansas was the location of Hazel Marie Cummings’ birth on October 8, 1939. She was the thirteenth child to be born to John and Mary Rose Wilburn. When Hazel was a young child, she was raised in a large family with fifteen siblings, and she was taught the importance of love, unity, and togetherness from an early age. On the basis of her graduation from Atchison High School in 1957, she laid the groundwork for a life that would be devoted to her family and the community.

Homemaker and Family Matriarch

Hazel demonstrated an unwavering love and dedication to the role of homemaker that she had taken on. Her happiness stemmed from the fact that she was able to provide a pleasant and nurturing environment for her children and grandchildren. On June 7, 1957, she tied the knot with Robert L. “Bob” Cummings, Sr., which marked the beginning of a journey that was filled with love, companionship, and dreams that were shared by both of them. Even though the loss of Bob on January 27, 2006, left a hole in Hazel’s life, her resiliency and strength continued to serve as an inspiration to those who were in her immediate vicinity.

Community Involvement and Hobbies

In addition to being a member of the Lancaster Saddle Club, Hazel was also an active member of the VFW Auxiliary. As she enjoyed riding and showing horses, it was clear that she had a deep love for equestrian activities and horses. Not only did she take care of her family, but she also made show clothes for her children, which is a demonstration of her creative ability and her commitment to making things happen.

As someone who was a huge fan of garage sales and auctions, Hazel found that the excitement of finding hidden treasures brought her a lot of joy. The family get-togethers she attended were filled with laughter and friendly competition thanks to her passion for card games, particularly pitch. On Sundays, the Wilburn family would get together for a cup of coffee to discuss and find solutions to the issues that plagued the world. This was a very special time for them.

Love for Music, Sports, and Family Reunions

He was a fervent supporter of Kansas City Chiefs football and Kansas University basketball, in addition to being a music enthusiast. Hazel’s interests were varied and varied. The family tradition of getting together for coffee on Sundays, which helped strengthen relationships and create memories that would last a lifetime, was missing from her Sundays. It was Hazel’s commitment to maintaining strong family ties that was demonstrated by her hosting of the seventy-fifth Wilburn Family Reunion.

Appreciated Heritage and Family Members Still Living

Her children, Kathy Baker, Deanna Lanter, and Joy Brown, as well as her son, Robert Cummings, Jr., are the ones who will carry on after her passing. In addition to her siblings Art Wilburn and Betty Wilburn, Hazel is survived by a total of seventeen great-grandchildren and twelve grandchildren. Hazel’s legacy of love and family values continues to the present day, despite the difficulties she has faced over the years, including the death of her grandson Bryan Cummings and her siblings.
