Homer Clarence Yoder, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and servant of God, peacefully passed away on February 14, 2024, at the age of 91, surrounded by his loving family at his residence in Midland, Michigan. Born on June 11, 1932, to Clarence and Delila Yoder, Homer spent his life dedicated to faith, family, and service to others.
On April 13, 1957, Homer married the love of his life, Janet Kay Gordon, embarking on a journey of nearly 67 years filled with love, devotion, and shared purpose. Together, they built a life centered on faith and service, touching the lives of countless individuals along the way.
In 1970, Homer, Janet, and their family relocated to Eagle Village in Hersey, Michigan, where they served as houseparents, working tirelessly with at-risk youth. This experience not only deepened their faith but also ignited a passion for ministry and community service that would shape the rest of their lives.
In 1975, Homer answered a call to ministry and became the pastor of Moorepark Church in Three Rivers, Michigan. For 28 years, he shepherded his congregation with compassion, wisdom, and unwavering dedication, leading them in their spiritual journeys and fostering a sense of community and belonging. Upon his retirement in 2004, Homer and Janet returned to Midland, where Homer continued to devote himself to serving others. He volunteered with Senior Services, delivering meals and providing transportation to seniors in need. Additionally, he served as a deacon at Christian Celebration Center, their beloved church, for the past 15 years, offering guidance, support, and spiritual leadership to his fellow parishioners.
Throughout his life, Homer’s love for God, his family, and his community was evident in everything he did. He found joy and fulfillment in ministering to others, sharing the love and compassion of his faith with all who crossed his path. His selflessness, kindness, and generosity touched the hearts of everyone he met, leaving a lasting legacy of love and service that will endure for generations to come.
Homer is survived by his devoted wife, Janet Yoder, and their children: Mike Jayne Yoder, Mark Diane Yoder, Sheila Ed Zuercher Yoder, Tenley Steve Starks, and Randy Williams. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Sara Stephen Maye, Joshua Jackie Suderman, Lindsay A.J. Smith, Amanda Yoder, Becca Brennan Walker, Alison Joseph Mumaw, Katelyn Zuercher, Jordan Jessica Starks, Lindsay Scott Little, and Leah Jeff Demjanenko Starks. Homer’s adored great-grandchildren include Ava, Jaren, Harrison, Parker, Carter, Emmy, Brady, Livi, Beckett, and Hattie. He is also survived by his siblings: Dorothy Shank, Janet Arlin Martin, and Lois Miller.
As family and friends mourn Homer’s passing, they take comfort in the knowledge that he is now reunited with his heavenly Father, his spirit forever enshrined in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Homer’s legacy of faith, love, and service will continue to inspire and uplift those who follow in his footsteps, a testament to a life well-lived in service to others and in devotion to God.
