In the quiet corridors of Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, surrounded by the love of his family, Paul E. Sottak, aged 78, breathed his last on Tuesday, February 6, 2024. A man of resilience, compassion, and ceaseless optimism, Paul’s life journey unfolded with a tapestry of roles – a dedicated veteran, a charismatic salesman, a loving family man, and a pillar of his community. Born on October 20, 1945, in Laconia to Edward and Claire Sottak, Paul was the youngest member of a blended family of ten.

Raised in the Lakes Region, he received his education in the Belmont school system. After high school, Paul embarked on a path of higher education, attending Brigham Young University for a year and later earning his degree in aeronautical engineering through evening classes at UNH, courtesy of his military service. aul’s commitment to his country was unwavering.

Exemplary Career in Medical Sales: Charisma and Compassion

Post his military service, Paul transitioned into medical sales, where he became the epitome of a charismatic and respected salesman. Commencing his prestigious career in 1973 with All Orthopedic Appliances, Paul continued to make a significant impact through subsequent companies, including Sotttak Orthopedic & Surgical, Orthopedics Unlimited, Biomet, and Zimmer. His accolades, patent writings, and enduring friendships speak volumes about his success in the field. Paul’s dedication extended beyond his professional life.

He served on the Belmont Shaker Regional School Board, advocating for a better education system for the children in his community. His coaching prowess, notably in Belmont’s Little League system, left an indelible mark. Paul mentored a team that would later clinch the state championship, earning him induction into the Belmont High School Hall of Fame in 2004 and 2019.

A Man of Many Passions: Gardens, Music, and Outdoor Pursuits

In 2009, Paul married his love, Julie, and they settled in Gilford, creating a haven where Paul indulged in his passions. A lover of nature, he cultivated large vegetable and flowering gardens, often watering them with a martini in hand. His love for music, dance, and crafting songs, combined with newfound culinary interests, added layers to his vibrant personality. A skilled chef, Paul crafted a mean chicken piccata, showcasing his diverse talents. Paul’s zest for life found expression in outdoor pursuits. Hunting trips out west and to Canada were cherished moments with friends. His love for fishing was evident as he prepared his boat for the upcoming season. A golf enthusiast, Paul relished the challenge and camaraderie the sport offered.

An Ever-Present Smile and Unyielding Optimism

Known for his infectious smile, Paul’s positive outlook on life was unwavering. He often encouraged others, saying, “You have been gifted with today. It’s up to you to decide if it’s going to be a good day or a bad day. I hope you choose a good day.” Fiercely competitive, Paul approached life with a fighting spirit, overcoming adversities such as war, electrocution, and pancreatic cancer. 

Paul’s capacity to love was boundless, leaving an imprint on all who knew him. His strong faith in Jesus guided him, and he faced death with the certainty of everlasting life. Survived by his loving wife, Julie, children, grandchildren, and numerous family members, Paul’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched. In the tapestry of Paul E. Sottak’s life, each thread tells a story of resilience, love, and unwavering faith.
