The community of Ensley Township, Sand Lake, is mourning the loss of a remarkable soul, Lyle E Hawkins, who peacefully journeyed home to be with his Lord on Monday, February 5, 2024, at the age of 88. His life, a testament to faith, service, and unwavering love, has left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know him.
Lyle was born on June 10, 1935, in Solon Township, MI, to Charles and Lottie (Caldwell) Hawkins. From a young age, he displayed qualities that would define his character—faith, integrity, steady resilience, and humility. In 1956, Lyle married his high school sweetheart, embarking on a journey of love and partnership that would span nearly seven decades.
A Life of Service: Masonry, Ministry, and Mission
Lyle’s life was one of service, both within his family and the broader community. As a lay leader (deacon) in his church, he exemplified a deep commitment to his faith. His dedication extended to his professional life, where he spent the majority of his career working for BOW Construction as a skilled brick mason and sight foreman.
Beyond his work, Lyle utilized his masonry skills for philanthropic endeavors. He lent his expertise to local camps, his church, and even embarked on a missions trip to Africa, leaving an impact that transcended geographical boundaries.
A Loving Family Man: Building Homes, Woodworking, and Outdoor Adventures
Lyle’s devotion to his family knew no bounds. He built his own home on the corner of his parent’s farm and lived there for 68 years until his passing. His love extended to his role as a father and grandfather, where he expressed his affection through building and house projects, as well as woodworking crafts. A man of the outdoors, Lyle cherished moments spent on the lake with his family. Surviving are his wife, Donna (Bennett) who he married on June 16, 1956; children, Paula (David) Dufendach, Timothy (Rebecca) Hawkins.
How Did Lyle E Hawkins Die?
Janice (Phil) Niekerk, Jennifer (Lee) French; 13 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; brother, Robert (Ruthann) Hawkins; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Edwin Hawkins and Linda Sommer. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, March 23, 2024 at Magnify Church – Ensley Campus, 7077 120th, Sand Lake. In his community, he was known as a craftsman of integrity, someone who could always be relied upon, and who never sought to take advantage of others.
