Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, John’s life was a testament to kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.
Throughout his illustrious career, John exemplified dedication and hard work in every endeavor. From his early days at Versa Services to his time at Glen Haven Manor, Campbell’s Family Restaurant, and Aramark, John brought his unique blend of professionalism and warmth to every role. Even in retirement, John continued to share his expertise through consulting work and found joy in helping others while selling appliances at Home Depot.
Passions and Pastimes
Beyond his professional achievements, John found true fulfillment in the simple pleasures of life. His beloved wife, Carole, was his constant companion, and together they shared countless cherished moments with their family. John was an avid golfer, finding camaraderie and joy on the greens of Mountain Woods Golf Club with his cherished buddies in the Senior Men’s League. He also pursued hobbies such as building wooden models, indulging in a good book, capturing memories through photography, and taking leisurely strolls with his loyal dog, Jiggs.
John’s compassion and selflessness were evident in every aspect of his life. He dedicated himself to serving others, volunteering as a leader with Scouts Canada for over a decade. As part of the 9th and 13th New Glasgow chapters, John shared his wisdom, guidance, and support with countless young Scouts, leaving an indelible mark on their lives.

John leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. He is survived by his devoted wife, Carole Courchesne, his loving children, Philip MacDonald and Paul Shaw, his stepchildren, Christine Perron and Martin Perron, his adoring grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his dear brother, William “Bill” MacDonald. Additionally, he leaves behind numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends, all of whom were touched by his kindness and generosity.
