In a somber moment for the University of Florida and the international tennis community, Andy Brandi, the esteemed Hall-of-Fame women’s tennis coach, passed away at the age of 72 on Thursday. Recognized as the first Gators coach to guide a program to three NCAA championships, Brandi’s influence extended far beyond the tennis court, leaving an indelible mark on the sport he loved. Old-school University of Florida enthusiasts can recall the multipurpose O’Connell Center and the days when a 200-meter indoor track encircled the second level.
It was here, three decades ago, that Andy Brandi, the hard-driving and famously fit coach of the Lady Gators, became a symbol of determination. Athletic Director Jeremy Foley, witnessing Brandi running alongside his women’s tennis team during sprint work, was captivated by the coach’s relentless pursuit of excellence. “Don’t let me catch you!” Brandi would yell, setting the tone for a coaching style that propelled his players to greatness.
