Mary Linda Crawford, born on August 15, 1943, transitioned to eternity on January 29, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. A resident of both Greensboro, AL, and Birmingham, AL, Linda’s vibrant personality and caring nature endeared her to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Linda was born to Gaines Durwood and Elizabeth Hannah Crawford, and from an early age, it was evident that she possessed a strong, caring, and beautiful personality. Her family, including brothers Gaines Durwood Crawford, Jr., and Gary Wilkerson Crawford, formed the foundation of her life. Despite the sorrow that accompanies her passing, Linda’s spirit lives on through her surviving family members.
Aunt “Lulu” and the Gift of Family
Linda was a beloved aunt, affectionately known as “Lulu,” to her four nieces: Elizabeth, Danielle, Natalie, and Valarie. Her role as an aunt went beyond familial ties; she became a source of love, guidance, and unwavering support. The love between Linda and her nieces created bonds that transcended the ordinary, leaving a lasting imprint on the hearts of all involved. Beyond human connections, Linda’s heart embraced her beloved fur children: Raggs, Cici, Pollyanna, Daisy, and Beach. Her home was a haven for these cherished pets, and their presence brought her immeasurable joy. The special bond she shared with her furry companions exemplified her nurturing spirit and love for all living beings.
Professional Journey: A Woman of Resilience
Linda’s professional journey reflected her resilience and spunky attitude. From her early days at Southern Natural Gas Company to a long and successful career in food sales with Sysco, Linda was known for her strong work ethic and vibrant personality. Her dedication to her work left a positive impact on those around her, earning her respect and admiration. In 1999, Linda took on a new role as the House Mother for Pi Kappa Phi at The University of Alabama.
For two decades, she delighted in caring for “her boys” as if they were her own sons. The affectionate moniker “Ms. C” became synonymous with a woman who brought warmth, love, and a sense of home to countless young lives. Her contribution to the fraternity was not just a job; it was a calling she embraced with passion and dedication.
Friendships that Last a Lifetime
In addition to her family and professional endeavors, Linda valued the friendships that enriched her life. Tommie Strickland, Jane Sears, Barbara Sears Planz, and Naomi Barr were not just friends but individuals who meant the world to her. Their companionship brought joy, laughter, and a sense of camaraderie that made life more meaningful.
A Celebration of Life for Linda will be hosted by the Pi Kappa Phi- Omicron Chapter at their Chapter House on Saturday, March 2, 2024, from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM. The event will include a service beginning at 10:00 AM, followed by a light brunch and reception. Friends, family, and those whose lives were touched by Linda are invited to join in remembering and honoring her legacy. A Lasting Legacy: In Lieu of Flowers
Per Linda’s wishes, there will not be a traditional funeral service. Instead, in lieu of flowers, Linda’s family encourages well-wishers to make donations to The Greater Birmingham Humane Society. This choice reflects Linda’s deep love for animals and her desire to contribute to a cause she held dear. As friends, family, and well-wishers bid farewell to Mary Linda Crawford, they are not saying goodbye to an ordinary woman but to a remarkable soul who left an indelible mark on the lives she touched.
Linda’s legacy lives on through the love she shared, the laughter she brought, and the countless hearts she enriched. In remembering her, there is a collective acknowledgment that her spirit will forever remain alive in the cherished memories she leaves behind.
