In the quiet embrace of eternal rest, we commemorate the life of Janet Mae Gustafson Plausse RN, a woman whose journey was marked by love, service, and an unwavering faith in God. Born in Clinton, Massachusetts, on January 30, 1935, Janet peacefully transitioned to her eternal home on January 30, 2024, surrounded by her family at the Sussman House in Rockport, ME. Her legacy is one of compassion, community involvement, and a steadfast devotion to her family and faith.
Early Years and Education: A Foundation of Compassion
Janet, the daughter of Carl and Ruth Peel Gustafson, spent her formative years in Hudson, MA, graduating from Hudson High School in 1952. Following her graduation, she pursued her calling in nursing, attending Mass Memorial Hospital (now Boston Medical Center) and graduating in 1955.
During the polio epidemic, she demonstrated exceptional dedication by working in the iron lung ward in Boston. Janet’s life took a poignant turn when she met Frederick A. Spencer during her nursing career. The two were married in 1958, but tragically, Mr. Spencer succumbed to Polio just one year later in 1959. Undeterred by loss, Janet continued her nursing career at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, where she encountered H. Robert Plausse, her future husband. They were married in 1964, establishing a life together in Pembroke, MA, for over 29 years.
Community Service: A Heart for Others
Janet’s commitment to community service was a defining aspect of her life. In Pembroke, MA, she led her daughters’ Camp Fire Girls group, served as a Den Mother for her boys in the Cub Scouts, and held roles such as President of the PTA and President of the Basketball Boosters Club at Silver Lake Regional High School.
Her contributions extended to serving as a part-time school nurse at the Center School in Pembroke. An avid Republican activist, Janet’s political engagement began early, voting for Eisenhower in 1952. Her dedication led her to serve on the Republican Town Committee in each town she lived. In Maine, she contributed to the community by joining the Lincolnville Women’s Club and serving as President for six years. Additionally, she was Chair of the Waldo County Women’s Republican Club and held positions in the Waldo County Republican Committee, Maine State Federation of Republican Women, and National Federation of Republican Women.
Faith and Family: Pillars of Strength
Janet’s faith in God was a constant guiding force in her life. As an active member of the Bayshore Baptist Church, she served as a pianist for many years, contributing to the vibrant church life. Her love extended to her grandchildren, where she shared Bible stories and family history, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts. Janet’s passing leaves a significant void in the hearts of all who loved her.
Her legacy is one of love, compassion, and unwavering faith. As we remember and honor Janet Mae Gustafson Plausse RN, we carry forward the values she held dear—community service, political activism, faith, and above all, love for family. Until the day we meet again, her memory will continue to inspire and guide us in the journey of life.
