On January 28, 2024, Charles Ronald “C.R.” Thompson, who resided in Rustburg and was 77 years old, passed away. It was on December 3, 1946, in Lynchburg that he was born. His parents, Florence Oneeda Carson and Charlie Russell “Shorty” Thompson, both passed away before his birth.
CR regularly attended the Rustburg United Methodist Church as a member. In addition to obtaining a degree in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech, he also holds a Master of Education degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. For a total of 36 years, CR was a secondary school teacher.
In addition to serving as a prominent umpire for Valley League Service for forty years, CR officiated sports such as baseball, football, volleyball, and basketball for a combination of 49 years.
In addition to serving as the “Grass Cutter” for Rustburg United Methodist Church, CR served as the secretary for the Chestnut Mountain Hunt Club throughout his life. His three children, Charles Russell Thompson (and his wife Deanna) of Lynchburg.
Savannah Thompson Evans (and her husband Joshua), and Chandler Langhorne Lawhorn (and his wife Cody), both of Rustburg, as well as his brother, Rick Thompson (and his wife Nancy) of Concord, and a large number of nieces and nephews, are among those who survive him.
Shelby Harper, his sister, passed away before him. He preceded her in death. On Thursday, February 1, 2024, at four o’clock in the afternoon, a memorial service will be held at Rustburg United Methodist Church. Pastor Matt Laskey and Pastor Sung Woon Yoo will preside over the ceremony together.
