In a heartbreaking incident at Muriwai Beach, a vibrant young life was tragically cut short. Police have identified the victim as 19-year-old Madison Marie Chamberlain from West Auckland, and the community is left to grapple with the profound sorrow that accompanies such a sudden loss.
Madison’s passing occurred on Sunday when the vehicle she was in rolled on the rugged west coast of Auckland. Two men in their 20s, also in the vehicle, sustained injuries but have since been discharged from the hospital. As the police investigation into the incident continues, the thoughts and sympathies of the community are extended to Madison’s grieving family and friends.
The incident unfolded less than a week after Muriwai Beach reopened to vehicles on January 15. The Auckland Council had previously voted to close the beach over high-risk and peak summer periods for the next three years, but it was reopened following this decision.
The beach is currently closed to vehicles as the council carefully navigates through the aftermath of the tragic accident. The closure serves as a necessary step to ensure the safety of beachgoers and to allow for a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In response to the tragedy, Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara kaumatua Glenn Wilcox performed a karakia (a Māori prayer) and implemented a rāhui (a customary prohibition) over the beach, extending until Thursday. This traditional practice acknowledges the spiritual significance of the land and seeks to bring comfort and respect to those affected by the tragedy.
Scott De Silva, the regional parks manager, shared on Monday that there are currently no plans to re-assess vehicle restrictions at this stage. While there have been ongoing discussions about implementing restrictions and improving safety at the beach, the focus now is on supporting the affected families and ensuring a thorough investigation.
The close-knit community at Muriwai Beach has been deeply affected by Madison’s untimely death, and expressions of grief and support have been pouring in. Notably, New World New Lynn, Madison’s employer, offered a heartfelt tribute to the young woman who worked on their checkouts.
