On Sunday evening, while the final episode of series 13 was being broadcast, Vera paid her respects to a deceased coworker who had been a part of the show for many years. An homage was written on a title card that showed on the screen just before the credits began to roll. This occurred right before the credits became visible.
On the title card, the following was written: “In memory of Julie Burnell in the years 1957-2023.” Following her time spent working as a creation Executive for ITV, Julie Burnell was involved in the creation of a variety of shows, some of which include Poirot, Vera, Trauma, and A Confession.
DCI Stanhope, who was portrayed by Brenda Blethyn, and the rest of the team were conducting an investigation into the murder of a chip shop proprietor whose body was discovered in his own pantry in the episode that may be considered the penultimate episode of the thirteenth season.
It became instantly apparent that the mysterious businessman had left behind debts, broken promises, ruined lives, and gravely interfered in the family business that was not his own as soon as the investigation was began. This turned out to be the case shortly after the investigation was initiated.
On the other hand, Vera and Joe Ashworth, who was portrayed by David Leon, were successful in capturing the individual who was responsible for the crime in a relatively short period of time. An unexpected death occurred at the close of the episode, which occurred after Joe’s father was admitted to a hospice.
