Patricia Carlin Obituary, Where Is Patricia Carlin?

In the quiet embrace of the night, our beloved mother, Patricia Carlin, peacefully left this world, her courageous battle against blood cancer finally at rest. As we gather to celebrate her extraordinary life, we reflect upon the indelible mark she left on us, her family, friends, and the entire Kalamazoo community. Patricia was more than a mother; she was a hero, a trailblazer who lived life on her own terms with an abundance of kindness, compassion, and advocacy. Her journey was a testament to her unwavering spirit, her boundless energy, and her relentless commitment to helping others.

A beacon of change, Patricia dedicated herself to creating a more inclusive and welcoming school environment at Kalamazoo Central. Her innovative restorative justice program and leadership of the school’s Gay/Straight Alliance were instrumental in fostering understanding and acceptance. Patricia’s legacy echoes in the hallways of the school and in the hearts of those she touched with her transformative work. The oldest of eight children, Patricia was not just a sister; she was a second mother to countless individuals. Her love knew no bounds, extending to all families she encountered. If you are reading this, Patricia loved your family too. Her legacy of love and giving is an enduring reminder to cherish each other and find inspiration in her selfless acts of kindness.

Patricia was a master storyteller, her tales infused with humor, wisdom, and a genuine love for life. To know her was to be her friend, and for her son, she was not just a mother but the best friend one could wish for. With a lifetime of stories, Patricia carried the Beatitudes in her heart, living out her values and never ceasing to help those in need. Never confined by retirement, Patricia’s work of love and giving followed her wherever she went. She was a great connector of people, introducing her son to his wonderful wife, Marin. Her role as a grandmother to Winnie, Rowen, and Wilder brought immeasurable joy, and she reveled in the simple pleasures of being a grandma.

Patricia’s impact extended beyond her immediate circles, making her a pillar of strength in the Kalamazoo community. She was ahead of her time, yet she never made anyone feel less than, and her wealth of wisdom was a guiding light for many. Whether traveling the world or swimming in Lake Michigan, her love for water was profound, and the big lake held a special place in her heart. A connoisseur of art, music, and culture, Patricia embraced the world of sports because of her son. Never missing a game, she was the only person to empathize with the losing team. With an innate sense of coolness, she always knew the next upcoming lecture, book, movie, or concert and generously shared these experiences with others.

Patricia often posted a quote that encapsulated her gratitude for life: “My predominant feeling is one of gratitude. I have loved and been loved. I have been given much, and I have given something in return… Above all, I have been a sentient being, a thinking animal, on this beautiful planet, and that in itself has been an enormous privilege and adventure.” – Oliver Sacks. Another quote that resonated with Patricia and adorned her award for the 2023 Diether Hanenicke Promise in Excellence Award was: “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” A question she answered with a life of purpose, love, and boundless giving.

As we say goodbye to Patricia Carlin, or “Madre” as her son lovingly called her, let us carry forward the torch of her legacy. Her love, compassion, and commitment to making a difference are enduring lessons that will inspire generations to come. In her memory, let us continue to live our lives with the same kindness, resilience, and love that she so effortlessly embodied. Madre, you were not just a mother; you were an extraordinary teacher, and we are forever grateful for the lessons of love, compassion, and joy you imparted to us. We love you.
