In the early morning hours of Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 2022, Dr. Phyllis Jeanne Snow, who had lived in the Flathead Valley for a very long time, died away quietly in her sleep. Her long-term carer, Carol Watson, was present at the time of her passing.
Her parents, Dr. Eugene Scudder and Virginia Bowen Scudder, as well as her husbands, Dr. Owen Thayer Marsh (who passed away in 1966) and Donald Dudgeon Snow (1927-2015), passed away before she was born. She is also leaving behind a large number of acquaintances and members of her extended family.
On June 21, 1934, Phyllis was born in Youngstown, Ohio, in the United States. Poland Seminary High School, located in Mahoning County, Ohio, is where she received her diploma. It was there that she developed an early interest in both music and science.
Phyllis was a talented musician who played the piano, violin, and flute. She attended Indiana University and received a Bachelor of Arts in Music degree when she graduated. Afterwards, she went on to receive a Master of Science degree in Geology from Indiana University, and then she went on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Watershed Management from the University of Montana.
Through the entirety of her life, she maintained these interests. From a professional standpoint, she spent a considerable amount of time working as a hydrologist for the United States Forest Service in Kalispell. She was a longtime member of the Glacier Symphony Orchestra, where she played the violin for many years, and she was also a member of the Flathead Valley Community Band, where she played the flute.
Her passion for music was so strong that she always liked playing her baby grand piano at home. Her prominent part in the violin section of the orchestra, which she played alongside her devoted husband Don, who was an exceptional bassist, was one of the joys of her life. She also took great pleasure in playing double bass with Don at the same time when they were performing.
