In the quiet corners of Olean, New York, a melody has faded, and the airwaves are a bit quieter, for Nicholas C. “Nick” Pircio, a beloved soul who touched the hearts of many, has passed away at the age of 70. Born on January 8, 1954, in New Brunswick, NJ, Nick’s life was a symphony of love, music, and a passion for broadcasting. Nick’s journey began in Manlius High School in Fayetteville, where he discovered his love for journalism and music. Later, he pursued a BA in Journalism from St. Bonaventure University, solidifying his commitment to the art of storytelling. His career unfolded in the realm of news radio, a stage where his distinctive voice and on-air charisma earned him the moniker “Network Nick.
The airwaves came alive as Nick shared his passion for music, becoming a DJ and newscaster for stations like WHHO/WCKR radio in Hornell and WESB radio in Bradford, PA. However, it was his longest tenure with WPIG in Olean that marked the pinnacle of his broadcasting journey. From the studio, he spun the tunes that resonated with the hearts of the local community, creating a sonic tapestry that connected generations. Beyond the radio waves, Nick’s love for education led him to become a substitute teacher and aide at Allegany Limestone Central School. His commitment to nurturing young minds extended beyond the classroom as he served as a judge for Odyssey of the Mind, showcasing his dedication to fostering creativity and innovation in students at local, state, and international levels.
Music, however, remained at the core of Nick’s being. His encyclopedic knowledge of 60s and 70s music made him a walking jukebox of memories. He reveled in the tunes that defined eras, sharing the magic of melodies with all who crossed his path. His interests extended beyond the audible spectrum, as Nick held a ham radio license and enjoyed tuning into shortwave stations, connecting with voices from around the world. An aficionado of antique radios, Nick found joy in collecting and restoring these relics of communication history. His adept hands breathed life into these forgotten machines, and through them, he bridged the gap between the past and the present. Nick’s curiosity extended to contemporary radios, showcasing his ability to navigate the evolving landscape of technology.
Nick was more than the sum of his professional endeavors; he was a devoted family man. On April 8, 1983, he married Susan Burdin, and their love story became a testament to enduring companionship. Together, they crafted a life rich in shared experiences, laughter, and love.
Nick leaves behind his loving wife Sue, his father Dr. Anthony Pircio, and a legacy of familial warmth that radiates through the generations. A man of faith, Nick was an active member of St. Bonaventure Church, where his voice soared in the choir. His commitment extended to the Allegany Knights of Columbus Council #1220, where he served as Grand Knight and as a 4th degree Knight with the Olean Assembly.
As the final notes of Nick’s earthly symphony fade, the memories linger the soothing cadence of his voice, the joyous laughter, and the love that surrounded him. In the embrace of his legacy, Nick’s spirit lives on, resonating through the airwaves he once graced and in the hearts of those who were fortunate to share in the melody of his life.
Friends and well-wishers are invited to pay their respects on Friday from 4-7 pm at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Rd., Olean. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday (January 20, 2024) at 11 am in St. Bonaventure Church, with Rev. Michael Reyes, OFM, presiding. The final resting place will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, where Nick’s earthly journey finds its peaceful conclusion.
