Pound Ridge, New York, and beyond mourn the passing of a beloved figure, Stephen Lawrence Brotmann, affectionately known as Larry, who departed this world on January 15, 2024. Larry’s journey, marked by warmth, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to community, leaves an indelible legacy that will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Born on January 3, 1939, in Philadelphia, PA, Larry’s formative years were spent in Atlantic City, NJ. A beacon of intellectual curiosity, Larry dedicated his life to making a positive impact on those around him. His love for literature, music, and all things academic, spanning both historical and contemporary realms, permeated every aspect of his being. Yet, his true passion lay in his deep love for family, friends, and community. Proudly tracing his roots to the founders of Brotmanville, New Jersey, Larry maintained strong connections to his southern New Jersey heritage throughout his life.
A distinguished alumnus of Dickinson College (BA ’60) and Columbia Law School (JD ’63), Larry practiced law for over four decades. His professional accomplishments were complemented by his active involvement in community service. Larry assumed leadership roles in various organizations, including Kiwanis and the Pound Ridge Zoning Board. Until two weeks before his passing, he served as the Moderator for a beloved lecture series at the Pound Ridge Library, a testament to his enduring commitment to fostering intellectual pursuits within the community.
However, Larry’s true passion and joy were found in the embrace of family. At the center of his world was his wife of 63 years, Marilyn, with whom he built a life defined by love, partnership, and shared dreams. Larry’s legacy lives on through his three sons: Andrew (Lisa), Matthew (Lisa), and Stephen (Charity). His devotion extended to his grandchildren, Alison, Emily, Eric, Sam, Lucy, Jack, Reid, and Aaron, each of whom he adored and who, in turn, held him in the highest regard.
Larry’s commitment to family and community was mirrored in the warmth and wisdom he generously shared with all. His leadership and dedication to community service were not merely roles he undertook; they were expressions of his deep-rooted belief in the power of collective action and the importance of nurturing a sense of togetherness.
A memorial gathering to celebrate the life of S. Lawrence Brotmann will take place at 1:00 PM on Sunday, January 21, 2023, at Conant Hall, 257 Westchester Ave., Pound Ridge, NY. This will be an opportunity for friends and family to come together, reminisce, and share the enduring impact Larry had on their lives.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, reflecting Larry’s commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others, especially the youngest and most vulnerable among us. As we bid farewell to Larry, we carry forward the lessons of love, community, and intellectual curiosity that he so beautifully exemplified throughout his remarkable life.
