Clarksville, TN mourns the loss of a cherished alumna, esteemed teacher, and remarkable individual, Mrs. Dorothy Miller Davenport. At the age of 87, surrounded by her loving family, Dorothy peacefully passed away at her home on January 13, 2024. As the community comes together to remember and honor her, we reflect on a life rich in accomplishments, compassion, and unwavering dedication. Born on January 26, 1936, in Clarksville, TN, Dorothy was the daughter of the late Walker and Beatrice Jones Miller. Her roots in the community ran deep, shaping the foundation for a lifetime of service and connection. In her passing, she reunites with her first husband, Paul Davenport, and her sister, Ruth Batts, who preceded her in death.
Dorothy’s legacy is carried forward by her surviving loved ones. She leaves behind her devoted husband, Peter Huff, a son, Peter Davenport, a proud member of the Class of ’77, and a daughter, Scarlet Susan Davenport, who graduated in the Class of ’79. Her family includes niece Mandy Batts, grandniece Lacy Ignacio, and grandnephew Wendell Jimerson. In this time of sorrow, they find solace in the memories of a woman who touched their lives with love, wisdom, and warmth. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at First Christian Church of Clarksville. Friends, family, and well-wishers are invited to pay their respects during the visitation starting at 10:00 AM. Additional visitation hours will be held from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Friday, January 19, 2024, at Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home. Graveside Services will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers chosen to honor Dorothy’s memory include Michael Purcell, Jonathan Sperry, Keith Sperry, Mark Mosley, Wendell Jimerson, and Jeff Bennett.
Dorothy’s impact on the community extended beyond the classroom. An award-winning horsewoman from the age of 12, she proudly owned, showed, and bred “World Champion TN Walking Horses,” achieving the prestigious “Ladies Fine Harness World Championship.” Her passion for horses reflected a spirit of excellence and determination that defined her character. In the realm of education, Dorothy’s influence was profound. Serving as an educator and counselor, she dedicated herself to molding young minds at Barksdale, New Providence, North East, Montgomery Central, and St. Bethlehem Schools. Her commitment to nurturing the potential in every student left an indelible mark on the educational landscape of Clarksville.
Beyond her roles in education and horsemanship, Dorothy was a multifaceted individual. She ventured into entrepreneurship, owning Eupdon catering, where she hosted weddings and parties, creating memorable moments for countless individuals.
Dorothy’s spirituality and sense of community were evident through her involvement with First Christian Church. As a 3rd generation member, she not only found solace in her faith but actively participated in community service. Volunteering for “The Food Room” at First Christian Church, she dedicated herself to feeding those in need, embodying the principles of compassion and kindness.
