In the quiet expanse of remembrance, we gather to pay homage to the remarkable life of W. Dean Porter, a man whose journey began on May 2, 1924, in Farwell, Texas, and reached its quiet sunset on January 12, 2024, in Pampa. W. Porter, known to many as Dean, leaves behind a legacy etched in the tapestry of service, family, and a vibrant commitment to community. Born to Fred and Ethyl Porter, Dean’s early years were shaped by the winds of Farwell, and as he grew, the winds of change led him to serve his country. On May 27, 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp, where he donned the role of a flight engineer on Martin B-26 Marauders. This period marked not only a chapter in his military service but also the beginning of a life marked by dedication and resilience.
In 1945, Dean married the love of his life, Doris Virginia Akin, setting the stage for a partnership that would endure the trials of time. After his honorable discharge, Dean embarked on a journey of exploration, trying his hand at various professions until he discovered his true calling in sales. His journey led him to Folger’s Coffee Company, where he found remarkable success. In Odessa, Texas, he serviced the vast West Texas area, distinguishing himself as one of only two men to sell an astounding 2 million pounds of coffee in a single year. Dean’s commitment to his family was equally extraordinary. A devoted father and husband, he navigated a demanding workweek away from home, only to return on weekends to transform the family abode. Dean, with a craftsman’s touch, remodeled the house, adding a bedroom and bathroom while constructing an apartment for his mother and a shop area. Every original door and window bore witness to his industrious spirit.
His professional journey continued after retiring from Procter & Gamble when he transitioned to Midland and joined Sewell Motor Company as a truck salesman. In 1978, Dean found love again with Loretta “Gerry” Farmer Black. Their marriage opened a new chapter that embraced community service, Masonic involvement, and extensive travels. Gerry’s role as Supreme Worthy President of the Social Order of Beauceant took them to 149 Eastern Star chapters across the United States. In the midst of these travels, Dean remained an active Deacon of the Cotton Flat Baptist Church, exemplifying his commitment to both spiritual and community bonds. Following Gerry’s passing, Dean relocated to San Angelo, where he lived independently until his final move to Pampa in July 2023. In the tapestry of Dean’s life, each chapter unfolded with purpose, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Dean’s journey was marked by both joy and sorrow. Alongside his accomplishments were the moments of loss, including the departure of his parents, brothers Rusty and Sam Porter, sister Carol White, wife Gerry Porter, and son Dempsey “Jack” Porter. The void left by their absence serves as a testament to the profound impact each had on Dean’s life.
Survivors include his son Lee Porter and wife Janice, along with grandchildren Chris Porter and wife Angela, Gavin Porter and wife Kelley, and Jai Jai Porter-Diehl and husband Gerry. The circle of family extends to great-grandchildren Bradey, Emiley, Hannah, Abbey, Duncan, and Alexis Porter, each a testament to the enduring legacy of a man whose love and influence reverberate through generations. As we prepare to bid a formal farewell at the graveside services on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Serenity Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Midland, we acknowledge the collective impact of W.
Dean Porter’s life. Pastor Rick Holeman of Cotton Flat Baptist Church in Midland will officiate the ceremony, guiding us through the moments of reflection and remembrance. Dean Porter’s journey, spanning nearly a century, is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, the strength found in love, and the lasting impact one individual can have on the world.
