At the age of 50, Mark peacefully departed this world at Good Samaritan Hospice, Heritage Valley – Beaver, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, service, and love. Born on March 23, 1973, in New Brighton, Mark was the beloved son of Robert Smilek and Arlene (Frederick) Ciccone. From the very beginning, he was surrounded by the warmth of a loving family that would play an integral role in shaping the man he became. Mark’s legacy would unfold as he navigated a life marked by extraordinary service and dedication.

A Survivor of 9/11: A Heroic Tale of Resilience

Mark Smilek’s story includes a chapter of heroism that will forever be etched in the annals of American history. As a survivor of the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon, Mark was a member of the Pentagon Protection Defense Force. His bravery and resilience in the face of tragedy showcased the indomitable spirit that defined his character. Mark’s commitment to service extended to his local community, where he served as a Police Officer for the Sewickley Borough Police Department and held the position of School Resource Officer (SRO) at Baden Academy. His leadership qualities were further exemplified as he took on the role of Chief of the Ohioville Police Department.

As a proud member of the Beaver Valley Chiefs of Police Association, the Pennsylvania Association of School Resource Officers, the NRA, and the Steel Valley Lodge, Mark demonstrated his commitment to professional growth and collaboration. His presence in these organizations contributed to the betterment of law enforcement practices and community relations.

Beyond his commitment to public service, Mark found solace and joy in the great outdoors. An avid hunter and fisherman, he embraced the serenity of nature and shared his passion with those around him. His love for outdoor pursuits reflected a balanced life, showcasing his ability to find beauty and tranquility amidst the responsibilities of his profession. Mark leaves behind his loving wife of eight years, Dr. Hilary (Miller) Jones, who shared in his joys and supported him throughout his journey.
